Turn Heads to Turn a Profit
I was raised by immigrant parents who live by the notion of “work hard but keep your head down.” Although they have done well, they never got far in Corporate America. These days, no matter how good you are at your job, silence is not your ally.
The guy who can barely do his job but is good at spotlighting his successes is probably going to be your manager. The woman who can take center stage after the completion of a successful project might make VP.

If you’re looking to advance in corporate, you need to make yourself known both inside and outside of your company. One of the best ways to do so is to highlight your achievements on LinkedIn. Essentially, it is the professional version of Facebook. After you start your free account, add work experience, licenses, certifications, and successes. It’s a great way to network professionally. Contribute to conversations and maybe you’ll raise some eyebrows.
But let’s step out of Corporate America for a minute and assume you’re self-employed. Are you the plumber who gets the job done but does no marketing? Maybe you’re the independent bookkeeper who does her job and goes home. If you’re looking to grow your business, this path will not lead to success.
You must be heard.

How can you make yourself known? There are many avenues to attract attention that require little to no monetary investment. Not a fan of being on camera? Write about the benefits of your business on your website- almost all websites will allow a blog page. Not sure where to start? You can hire freelancers or you can have a conversation with one of my favorite AI writing assistants named Claude. A business page on Facebook or Nextdoor can also help raise your visibility.
Social media is probably the easiest way to make noise for introverts or busy business owners. If you’ve been following me for a while, you won’t be surprised when I say that video is a great way to expand your reach. Whether you’re thinking about TikTok, Instagram, or YouTube, know that many people these days don’t watch television like they used to. They like to tune into things when they are ready. Show them how you can solve their problem or make their lives easier.

Grant Cardone has a page on his site called “Be Known or Be Gone.” Even as an introvert, he understands the power of garnering attention. Similarly, another writer states that where attention flows, money will follow. If you are constantly in front of your clients or potential employers, you are more likely to score that home run but don’t just be part of the noise. Craft your message and focus on your audience’s needs.
That being said- keep dreaming big and working hard. But do not go silently into the night.
The writer has two graduate degrees and a yellow belt with Lean Six Sigma.
